“This often-overlooked transition point, known as aging out, is a critical life shift that most families aren’t prepared for.” – Benni Versaci, Spectrum Care Management & Counseling Founder
Mahwah, NJ — While most families are preparing for back-to-school season with new backpacks and class schedules, countless parents in our region and across the country are quietly facing a very different kind of milestone: their special needs child is about to turn 21 and “graduate” out of the system they have depended on for years.
For families of young adults with Autism, Down Syndrome, and other developmental disabilities, turning 21 marks the end of school-based services and the beginning of an uncertain new chapter. And many are overwhelmed, not knowing where to turn.
“We get calls from parents in tears. They’ve had support since their child was 3 years old with early intervention, IEPs, and a structured system. Suddenly at 21, they are left to their own devices to figure it all out,” says Benni Versaci, Founder of Spectrum Care Management and Counseling, which has helped thousands of families across New Jersey. “This often-overlooked transition point, known as aging out, is a critical life shift that most families aren’t prepared for.”
A Back-to-School Call to Action
With growing concern over proposed changes to Medicaid and SNAP funding, Spectrum Care continues to help families understand how policy shifts impact real-life support. The organization is amplifying the voices of parents and self-advocates to ensure disability services remain accessible and compassionate.
Unlike traditional graduations, turning 21 in the special needs community means losing access to school-based programs and entering the adult services maze governed by the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD).
Through monthly webinars, personalized support coordination, and resource education, Spectrum Care is equipping families to navigate the adult disability system before the crisis hits.
“Knowledge is power,” concludes Versaci. “We can educate families on what support coordination is and what it isn’t, so they know what to do and what to expect. We’re not just helping them find services. We’re building a foundation for a productive life.
